FAQ

Everything people ask before their first practice. Still unsure? Message the WhatsApp or email us.

Joining

Do I need any experience?

No. Most people who join have never done Jiu-Jitsu or wrestling. There are no tryouts and no cuts; every practice includes instruction for beginners.

Who can join?

Jiu-Jitsu is open to all Harvard students. Women's Wrestling is a women-only program. Harvard Club Sports are open to undergraduates, and eligibility for graduate students and affiliates follows the Club Sports Office membership rules; ask us if you're not sure.

How do I actually join?

Join the WhatsApp community, then come to any practice on the schedule. We'll handle the club sports paperwork and dues with you after you've tried a session.

Can I train in more than one discipline?

Yes. One membership covers every branch of the club, and we schedule practices so they don't overlap. Plenty of members train more than one.

Cost

How much does it cost?

Dues start at $20. They go up if you want a uniform (gi or wrestling singlet) or club merchandise. That's it: no per-class fees.

Is financial aid available?

Yes. Financial aid is available for undergraduates so that cost is never the reason someone doesn't train. Email [email protected] or talk to any officer; it's a quick, confidential conversation.

Practice

What should I wear to my first practice?

Athletic clothes with no zippers, pockets, or buckles: shorts or leggings and a fitted t-shirt or rash guard. Bring water. You don't need a gi, singlet, or wrestling shoes to start. See the Jiu-Jitsu and Wrestling pages for specifics.

Where are practices?

Jiu-Jitsu trains in the multipurpose room at the Quad Recreation Center (QRAC). Wrestling trains in the 3rd-floor wrestling room at the Malkin Athletic Center (MAC). Bring your HUID to swipe in. Maps are on the schedule page.

Do I have to spar or wrestle live?

No. Live rolling, live wrestling, and sparring are optional, especially for beginners. Drill as long as you like; when you're ready to go live, we'll pair you with an experienced partner who'll match your pace.

Will I get hurt?

Combat sports are contact sports and bumps and bruises happen, but serious injuries are rare when everyone trains with control. Our rules are simple: communicate, tap early, respect the tap, no slams, no cranks. Coaches and officers watch every live round.

Do I have to compete?

Never. Competing is optional in every branch. If you want to, we'll get you ready and travel with you.

I'm a Harvard grad student or staff member. Can I train?

Possibly. Club sports membership rules depend on your affiliation. Email us and we'll walk you through what's allowed.
